This is pretty nice. I hang mine from the ceiling and watch flicks from Netflix. Definitely a big improvement over the public theatre. The screen is heavy enough that it hangs straight and it rolls up easily. I sprayed a little silicone spray on the spring mechanism to keep things smooth. Be aware that there is a black border around the screen so it isn't entirely white. This hasn't affected my viewing pleasure. Very happy with the product.

5 Tips For Outstanding Corporate Headshots

For most companies, a corporate headshot is a requirement for the executives as well as the employees. These photos are used on company websites; business cards and promotional materials. This usually means that a lot of people are going to see your photo, and it may not be presenting you in the way that you feel most attractive.

A lot of people don't enjoy having their photo taken anyway, and when it's 'picture day' at the office, they dread it even more. The most common complaints are that corporate headshots are too generic and unattractive. Well, with these 5 basic tips, your corporate photos can go from 'ow' to 'wow'...

1: Avoid office lighting. Most corporate headshots are taken in your office location, where the light is a combination of overhead and fluorescent. Both of which are extremely unflattering. If at all possible, arrange to have your photos taken outside, or in a room with plenty of natural light. Even if your photographer brings additional lights, combining those with natural light is always preferable to office lighting.

2: Schedule your photos in the afternoon. People rarely look their best in the morning, especially not when they've just arrived at the office and haven't even had their coffee break yet! The best time of day to book your photo session, is right after lunch.

Having a corporate headshot session can be stressful for a lot of people. To reduce that stress, plan for the photos to be done when everyone has had a bit of time to relax, to eat and to get ready to have their picture taken.

3: Allow plenty of time. A common mistake is to schedule for about 5 minutes per person. In most situations, it's much better to schedule for 10-15 minutes for each individual or group. If employees are feeling rushed and the photographer is feeling hurried, that's going to show in the photos, particularly in people's facial expressions.

It takes a while for most people to relax and look natural in front of a camera. It's definitely worth scheduling enough time for that to happen. Remember, these photos are a representation of your company, so it's important that everyone looks happy to be there!

4: Give people some privacy. If someone is already feeling tense about having their picture taken, it's going to be even more difficult for them if their co-workers are looking on. Arrange to have people go into the session one at a time, or one group at a time. And whether it's indoor or outdoor, choose a location that's an enclosed area.

5: For unique corporate photos, avoid generic backdrops. If the tone of your business is friendly and personable, your photos should reflect that. Instead of one bland background for everyone's picture, have your photographer take shots of people at their work areas, or outdoors or in front of the company logo.

If your company is youthful and creative, then get creative with your headshots! Have photos of your employees holding your company products, or holding up something that symbolizes their job skill or their personality. Fun, attractive, appealing shots of a company's employees and executives, can often make all the difference in attracting new clients.

the quality of the video is more than great. I havent had a chance to test the network capabilities. A little noise like most projectors. Lamp last over 2,000 hours and replace costs 250 dollars. It's heavy there for it is not a good idea to buy itif you plan to take it every where.

Power Up Your Power Point Presentations

Brian Fugere and several co authors wrote a great book titled Why Business People Speak Like Idiots, a look at the frightening world of corporate speak. I would like to suggest a sequel called Why Business People Create Slides that Put You to Sleep.

You've seen these people. You've probably been in their audiences. They have 495 slides which they read to you one by one in a monotone voice with no facial expression and expect you to follow along in a font that even your ophthalmologist couldn't translate.

For starters, most of us can read by ourselves, thank you very much. Secondly, assuming we can read, maybe the presenter should just send us the slides and spare us the presentation?

Am I being too sarcastic? Perhaps. But, I spend most of my time coaching people through presentations and critical meetings for which they've spent a lot of time designing and perfecting slides, but little if any time thinking through their message. Creating slides is not communicating. According to the English dictionary, communicate means to "converse", to "impart" or to "connect". The only thing connective about most slide shows is the plug that you stick into the socket to make the projector run.

So, what is a presenter to do?

No One Came to See a Slide Show. Before you create a single slide, think about what you want to say. What do you want people to think, do, know or feel when you're done speaking? If the slides crashed, could you still tell the story? If your answer is no, then your message is muddled and you don't truly own your material. Write your talk first and then create slides that reinforce what you're saying instead of using your slides as a script.

Talk, Don't Read. Reading is for the eye. Listening is for the ear. It's important to create slides that speak in phrases, not sentences so you talk instead of read. Eliminate words such as, if, the, in, on, and of. Instead, use 3 to 5 words per line to reinforce what you're saying so people listen to you instead of reading the slide. Look for opportunities to reveal the lines to prevent people from reading ahead so you focus their attention where you want it.

Don't put everything on the slide. What works in print doesn't always translate to slides. Your job is to help listeners make sense of information. If you cram too much on the slide, they'll be reading item Z while you're still talking about item A. Instead of cutting and pasting data from a study, create colorful charts, graphs and pictures that highlight data, evoke emotion and make the information more relevant. That's what listeners remember.

Think headline. Look at each slide and ask: "What's the headline and what does it mean to the people in the room?" Then think about how to walk them through the information. For example: "Look at the purple box on the left compared to the yellow box on the right. It's nearly double the size. That means we've doubled our profits." While every slide doesn't have to stand on its own, it must have a reason for being there such as setting up a point or driving home a message.

We don't do it that way here. Just because others drone on doesn't mean you have to be boring too. Think of every presentation as a huge opportunity to inform, persuade or sell your point of view. If a slide set has been designed for you, you should still look for ways to personalize the information and create moments that audiences remember. If you are required to present every single slide, that doesn't mean you have to read every point. Provide an overview and tell the audience that details will be available in written form later.

Hit them over the head. Your first few words determine whether your audience tunes in or out. So, why do people need a slide to tell the audience what they are going to talk about? Don't they know why they're here? When you open your mouth, hit them over the head with a story or example that engages and grabs attention so they understand why they should care? Ask what's in it for them?

Finally, create slides for people in the back of the room. Use color, big fonts and contrast. Remember, every time you speak, you're on! Look for ways to stand out and set the bar a bit higher so people look forward to hearing what you have to say.

How To Open a Speech or Presentation

At a recent corporate storytelling workshop for Microsoft, I was asked a question that I hear frequently: âHow do I open my speech?â Several others in the room agreed that the first two or three minutes of a speech are often the most awkward.

Is it that way for you, as well? Do you have a hard time getting started, but once you get going, youâre all right? If so â" welcome to the club.

In this article, Iâm going to share what has worked for me and helped me build a lucrative speaking business. Iâll also share the results of my research into what transforms a good speech into a Dynamite Speech.

I used to have a lot of anxiety before I gave a speech. I knew most of what I was going to say â" not word for word â" but in general. I knew what stories I was going to tell and what quotes I was going to use, and the overall sequence of things. What freaked me out was what I was going to say first.

I knew that telling a joke was out of the question because I canât remember jokes. Plus, any rule that is supposed to work for everyone â" such as âalways open with a jokeâ â" is obviously a stupid rule! If there is one thing that Iâve learned from my own experience as well as from other speakers, itâs that there is no ONE single way that works for everyone.

One day I was at the theater, sitting in the audience waiting for the curtain to go, and I had a revelation. I remembered all of the plays I had acted in and how the first line of each play was specifically chosen to set the stage for everything that came after it.

That got me thinking about the most powerful speeches Iâd ever heard. They all started out with something meaningful. They didnât start with the speaker thanking anybody or talking about how wonderful it was to be in Buffalo, New York in January (because itâs cold as heck). The first words out of their mouths were meaningful. They said something provocative or asked a provocative question.

I also realized that while Iâd seen people start out with loud rock or disco music as they ran up the aisle from the back, for me, the most powerful openings were simple and direct.

Here are a few options for opening your speech, taken from my Dynamite Speech System.

Opening #1 â" The Provocative Statement or Question Opening

Walk out to the center of the stage or room. Stand still and get centered. Let the silence sit there for a few seconds to build anticipation. Then, make a provocative statement such as: If you want your content to stick, emotion is the fast lane to the brain.

Another option is to ask a provocative question such as: When you give a speech, do you talk too much?

Notice how each of those statements is a bit contrarian. I love to combine two elements that are logical opposites. They make you think. The idea that you will get content to stick to the brain with emotion is illogical. The idea that you can talk too much while giving a speech is provocative.

What can you ask or say as your opening that will set up one of the main points of your speech? After you say it, pause. Let the statement or question hang there in space. Then move on.

Opening #2 â" The Quote Opening

Find a provocative quote that seamlessly introduces your main point or premise.

Opening #3 â" The Story Opening

Start by telling a story. Stories are an immediate attention grabber and activate your listenersâ imagination. Make sure you choose the right story to open with. It canât be too dramatic or hilarious. Your Crucible and Imbroglio stories need to go in the middle of your speech. Choose a story that makes one of your main or the main point of your speech. You may begin the story up front, take it through to Step 4 - Encounter the Obstacle, and then stop. You can then close your speech with the resolution of the story, beginning with Step 5 - Overcome the Obstacle. Another option is to tell the entire story, make the point and then move on.

Opening #4 â" The Rapport Builder Opening

If youâve done your homework and used a pre-program questionnaire to discover the issues your audience is facing, you can open with a few statements that let them know that you understand their pain. Three or four sentences that address their current situation are all that you need to create a bond and let them know youâre not going to give a generic rah-rah speech. Perhaps you can mention the name of someone in the audience who you spoke to on the phone before the meeting or conference. Then, give a speech that customizes your concepts and solutions to their needs and issues.

The main thing I want you to consider for your opening is to start strong. Know exactly what youâre going to say. Donât waste time with chitchat about the weather or the city youâre in. Get right to it. Surprise them. Shock them. Make them think.

I also donât believe that itâs necessary or effective to thank the meeting planner up front. If youâre going to do that at all, do it at the end.

What has worked for me is to memorize the first three or four sentences of my speech and to use the same opening over and over. Knowing exactly what Iâm going to say and precisely how Iâm going to deliver those lines, gives me confidence.

It helps that the words I say are part of my branding. If youâve ever heard me speak, you know that there are a number of power phrases â" provocative statements if you will â" that are consistent from speech to speech and audience to audience. I donât make up something new every time and I donât mess with what works.

If youâve been asked to deliver a sixty-minute keynote speech, every minute counts. The first sixty seconds is critical to how your audience perceives you. My advice is to write and memorize your opening. Deliver it the same way time after time. Tweak it when necessary until you have it down to the precise statement that creates the effect youâre looking for.

Open strong and close with confidence.

What is it?
When my 18 month old son brutally murdered our HD widescreen TV by pounding on it, I sought a home theatre solution that would keep us happy while keeping things out his reach. Enter the Infocus 4805. About the size of a phonebook, this projector is optimized for DVD watching, but also delivers amazingly nice images from HD cable boxes via component cables. It is NOT true HD, but you might be fooled when watching HD sports and movies. It's that good. The unit is best hung from the ceiling and inexpensive excellent mounts for this popular model are available on that big auction site. While you can use a white wall, you'd do better to get some type of screen. We hung a 100 inch pull down manual screen
Does it work well?
When I got this thing home I slapped it on my coffee table just to "see it work" and threw a 11 foot wide image on a wall via Spiderman 2 from my DVD player. WOW! Unless you've been looking at these recently, you'll be amazed at the quality this unit delivers. Everyone who sees it says its like being in a theatre...and many of my friends are in the film biz! Sitting back 1.5 to 2 times screen width distance you have a true theatrical display in 16X9 format. Other aspect ratios are rendered nicely and it's really a kick to revisit films like Treasure of Sierra Madre to see Bogart as he should be seen...BIG!
What about regular TV?
It's viewable, but the unit loses close to half of it's resolution with the lower quality cable output. We tend to use it for HD shows. HD HBO or even American Idol look amazing.
What will I really spend?
You'll need the projector, screen, cables, projector mount and maybe some hardware to hide wires and so on. The projector is designed to be used with an external home theatre of some type, but we'll assume you already own that. Circuit City sold us our for 1100.00 with a 100 dollar rebate. In addition we got a 4 year warranty for 175 that covers the 4000 hour bulb! We spent about 1600.00 setting up our projector with mount and a 100 inch screen. We spent under 300 on a screen and that's cheap. You can spend a lot more of course.
What are the downsides?
Well, you really need a dark room. This is probably not ideal for casual viewing while you hang out and eat frozen dinners. It works best with a nearly dark room. There is also fan noise: It's there and easily audible, especially during quiet passages of a soundtrack. Some people build a projector box to cut the sound but I don't find the computer type fan noise too bothersome. Replacement bulbs, if you didn't get the warranty, are 329.00. Still, 4000 hours is a LOT of viewing time. In a week of use...watching movies and some HD programs we racked up 25 hours on the bulb which means one bulb should last 3 years and then the warranty gives us a free bulb. No problem there.
Shouldn't I just get a LCD or Plasma?
I'm not going to tell you that a 1000 dollar projector has a sharper better image than a good Plasma or Wega CRT. But in REAL WORLD applications this unit simply blows away conventionally sized sets. The image simply pops and at 8 or 10 feet (or more) wide, you get an amazing experience. More than one person has said they felt like they were watching a giant plasma. Forget about the details of resolution and contrast ratios...this simply SLAPS any plasma, CRT or LCD set with it's very good image and truly huge screen. No one has preferred my previous HD widescreen CRT (which was very carefully set-up and tweaked) to the projector. Yes, it's that good.
Maybe I should buy a better project?
Maybe you should but this unit actually has better contrast levels than some premium models out there. I think this is a perfect unit to buy while we wait a bit on newer technology and the new DVD formats. They'll be introduced soon, but it may be another year after that before the dust settles. If you are happy with your current system, waiting is rarely a bad idea. If you see a 4805 properly set up you probably won't wait. Have I seen a projector I liked better? Sure, and it cost over 5K and looked only a bit better with HD signals. Infocus has tweaked the 4805 into a giant killer, though a lot of salesmen will call it an entry level projector.
Is it reliable?
Yep, until it breaks. I hear of a LOT of projectors of all types failing. Get the EXTENDED WARRANTY and you'll be fine. Or don't get it and be sorry like some other folks. I'll never understand people who don't get extended warranties on this type of item...or laptop computers!
Conclusion:
If you have the space, dark room and love movies this is the only way to fly. You get a system that is quite close to watching a movie in a smallish multiplex theatre. It's also out of the reach of small children and eliminates that big box of a TV or huge wall mounted plasma. The 4805 theatre system essentially disappears when the screen is retracted. My wife loves it.

Ever wonder why everybody equates "PowerPoint" with "bullet points"? It's because MicrosoftÂ® made the default layout for new slides automatically create a bullet-point list of text.

Don't be lured into the bullet point trap. Experiment with different slide layouts - especially with "Blank"-and with placing text and graphics in different locations. Your slides are actually blank canvasses on which you can put anything any place. If you find that scary - like too much freedom - gain some confidence by learning some elements of good design. An excellent source of ideas for color combinations, as well as for the density and placement of text and graphics, is magazine ads, and even billboards. The subject matter is irrelevant. Simply identify ads that you find pleasing and effective, note their color schemes and structure, and you will soon discover some common characteristics, e.g. simple, uncluttered layouts; easy-to-read text; etc.

To give you a quick start on how to design presentations with a bit of polish and pizazz, I've developed the Ten Commandments of PowerPointÂ® Presentation Design. They are the first steps to designing heavenly presentations.

1. Thou shalt not clutter a slide with bullet points.

I find the previous review strange, because it was the same sort of lamp-replacement runaround from Infocus that prompted me to switch brands from Infocus to Sony nearly a year ago. I guess I must assume that similar problems affect several, possibly even most brands.

Note that this unit has a "high altitude" setting. I'm at around 5000ft and I did enable that option during initial set up. It causes the fans to run at a slightly higher speed for more effective cooling at altitude, resulting in just a bit more noise, but nothing compared to my old Infocus. I imagine that high altitude operation without using the setting might lead to premature failure, whereas running the high altitude setting at lower elevations might actually keep things cooler and possibly even improve longevity. Just a thought. Stable power is also important for front projectors. I have my unit on a good quality power conditioner/UPS to protect against any spikes or brownouts.

In any case, I've had the unit nearly a year and have been pleased with its performance. Image quality is excellent, especially when using the HDMI input. It's seen extensive use (somewhere over 2000 hours, I haven't checked lately) and I've only had to replace the air filter thus far. The unit came with a spare filter in the box.
The VPL-HS51 was a truly exceptional product a year ago, though now there are a few other similar/comparable units on the market, and some people are starting to look at moving to 1080p with the advent of Blueray and HD DVD. Even so, I personally feel no need to upgrade in the short term and wouldn't hesitate to recommend this projector to anyone who will be satisfied with 1280x720. If you run large screen sizes (e.g. larger than 80"), have a short viewing distance, and good eyesight it probably makes sense to go for 1080p even if it means waiting a little longer to make a purchase, but otherwise I think most people would be happy with 720.

There are plenty of excellent reviews of the VPL-HS51 on the web already so I won't go into great detail here, but in short, I'm completely satisfied and haven't had any problems whatsoever.

When choosing the specifics of HT seating, one consideration includes the fabrics available for your seating surfaces. For most home theater owners, HT seating fabrics are basically a personal preference. As you examine your home theater seating options, you may think about both fabric options as well as different types of leather in your selected seating style.

Personal preference really dictates theater seating fabric choices. Most theater seating preferences tend to lean toward leather, but there a many people in the market for less expensive home theater seating. Less expensive options include suede, or even polyurethanes, for a smaller investment. The most important thing about the theater seating cover is that often you can special order and personalize it, particularly if you want a thematic home theater. For example, you may wish to have red chairs because your school colors are red. With many HT seating manufacturers, these thematic options are possible. Note: Your output device must be able to transmit a digital coaxial signal. This adapter will not work if your device only outputs Left/Right analog stereo signals.
3.5mm Stereo Male to 2 RCA Female Adapter This adapter is mainly used to output sound via the headphone jack on a computer or laptop, to a television with a standard 2 RCA audio cable (Red and White connectors).

We criticize others far too much. This is a waste and self-defeating. In criticizing others we criticize their true selves - their essence - their Essence. Their essence is the same as our own. Our essence is the Essence too of the Creator. When we criticize others we criticize The Creator. If we criticize ourselves we direct our criticism at the Creator.

This is the reason why attacks on race creed and color are self-destructing. These cannot be separated from attacks against the Creator.

A few years ago I visited Arthur - a friend of mine. His wife Queenie led me in through a heady waft of fried bacon tomatoes sausages eggs fried bread and best butter on fresh stone-ground whole-meal plus strong hot orange-tips tea. By chance some of his relations were down from the north on a quick visit.

The atmosphere in the living-dining room was cozy and relaxed because of the decor and the warm light from the standard lamps. Having met the relatives once before I was much at home and glad to be there. Georgeâs smiling sisters Judith Lilly Polly Big-Beatty and his niece Anna were sat comfortably round the dining table. The four were senior nurses either Sisters or Matrons.

Judith wore her hair like Dr Johnson and was the sort to make even a vicar wash his feet before he set foot in her house. Lilly had red hair and gray eyes. She smoked âCraven Aâ cigarettes. Polly had dancing eyes and saw the funny side in everything. She liked a bag of hard pears and a Raymond Chandler paperback in the bath. Big Beatty was big and acted big. Young-Bettyâs husband had died six months before down the coalmine so she still had little to say save to cut your legs off. They were all surprised and pleased to see me.

I was given a good kissing and these hearty women called and laughed back and forth with lit up faces while they got me organized with plates and cutlery steaming hot bacon and eggs and fried potatoes.

After some chatter Judith frowned and began to look concerned. She stared round for the clock feeling it was time to fidget about the last bus home and began to stand up. âCome along Girls!â Judy yelled.

Picking up on this Arthurâs eyes became calculating slits. A rush of urgency went through his body and he rose like a pheasant and chunted: âit wonât take but a minute to get me color slides out Our Judy. Iâve already written the words!â Arthur pushed Judith back in her chair and took pasteboard three-d spectacles from nowhere and thrust them at various angles on each of the noses. The girlsâ shifted their weight from buttock to buttock and an eyes-down silence sank upon them. They looked straight ahead and their breasts heaved in one communal slow intake of breath. Arthur was already dragging the screen box in from the Hall and hauled it onto a chair. The lid was opened and bits of framework were unhinged and the screen wedged between its stays in a rather lopsided fashion. The screen box framing and screen on its chair was pushed hard against the wall to stop the lot falling over.

âYouâll love this Our Judy.â Said Arthur hopping about. The sisters were agape with their necks tense and turned towards Arthurâs Queenie as if to a judge of appeal. Queenie merely gazed back with a silent smile.

The slide projector was conjured up and plunked down on a pink light-alloy tea trolley pushed to center stage. This leant first this way then that because it was not rigid. Standing leaning towards the lopsided screen it looked like a goat ready to smash it to pieces.

Plug tops extension leads cables transformers control buttons all collected in a festoon of adaptors at the wall outlet. Queenie forced the plugs into their sockets with the help of an old wooden tea tray swung on edge. Lillyâs eyes were alight with warm amusement.

Slide cassettes were brought in from a bedroom wardrobe and the first one ram-loaded into the projector giving the tea trolley a diagonal thrust towards the southwest. Arthur flicked the on/off switch but produced no light and Queenie had to own up to not having switched the power supply on.

âBetter switch the lights off while weâre at it Queenie so the colors will shine up a treat.â Queenie then plunged everyone into sudden darkness except for the streetlights shining in through the orange curtains.

Arthur turned the projector on and a blinding rectangle of white light at forty-five degrees shone on part of the wall and part on the ceiling cornice and the remainder highlighting one cheek of the backside of a chipped cherub on the ceiling. Judith choked and said something about a headache. Polly blew a cloud of cigarette smoke into the projectorâs beam and made the room look as if it were on fire. Big Beatty stretched herself somewhat and Lilly giggled.

Arthur got up and reaching for the projector caught his foot in a cable and the white rectangle of light plummeted to the floor then at high speed circled round the living room walls three or four times before being brought under control where the projector finally shone an intense beam of concentrated light straight into Judithâs terrified face.

The tea trolley was sorted out and Arthur still on his feet was able to more of less register the lit screen area with the view panel. This was now too low as silhouettes of heads were cast on the screen. Three cushions placed under the screen box eased the problem. Arthur took the button control and with his words in his right leant towards the projector beam to start his talk. There was a click and a series of mechanical sound movements. Then everything went black. There was a tut-tut from Arthur. Lilly started to giggle. Polly coughed Big-Beatty said nowt.

âThat must be that blank.â Said Arthur.

The button clicked again and two huge nostrils appeared on the screen. Judith said âI canât quite see anything Arthur.â Again the button clicked and a larger single nostril with hair took over. A further click and a picture of a red rose appeared.

Arthur squirmed into a sort of protruding serpentine belly pose with feet together left hip to the left all slightly twisted to the right with lips and eyes skewed gazing up towards some other world. He said:

âThis is a red rowhze! Is there anything so beautiful as a rowhze?

Judith tried to uncross her eyes peering through the angled three-d specs and said: âWell yes I think I can see but - weâll all have to be going now you know Our Arthur itâs getting a bit late.â

Young Anna said: âNext.â

The control button clicked again. We saw a four-floors block of flats about ten degrees off vertical leaning down back from a road with occupiers apparently trying to hold on to their balcony walls for dear life. Arthur chin in and in deep declamatory voice mode roared:

âThis is a block of flats built for rent under the local municipalityâs direct labor scheme co-sponsored by the area committee of The Amalgamated Union of General Construction Industry Workers. Notice the balcony access.â This statement was received by us masses with cold awe and further heightened by Arthur - addressing his sisters ââ¦donât worry about the last bus.â

Another click and a woodland âstandâ of Beech in a sea of Bluebells appeared. This âstandâ was again more of a lean at seventy degrees down hill. Arthur paused for the effect to sink in and then said âI always think of Wordsworthâs âThe curfew tolls the knell of parting dayâ when I see this slide. It reminds us how fallible we all are.â

Judith had cast off her three-d specs and said âAh! Now thatâs beautiful Our Arthur.â There was general approbation with nodding of heads and more movements of getting up and going.

Still another click and the next slide showed a row of isolated seats that must have been photographed from the back of a bus in a field of sheep. Arthur was mystified by this picture because he had no idea where or why it had been taken.

The rest of the slides were equally unique. Arthur and Queenie were on a cruise around the Scottish Islands where passing boats climbed like fighter planes into the stratosphere or ran as if before the wind downhill. There was half a bus. A phalanx of pedestrians came head-on except they had no heads. Picture mounts bisected walkers. An unseen hand off picture held a dog on a leash. A garbage collector emptied a trashcan into some imaginary tip. A tramp put rubbish into a street bin. Lettering on a parked van read only ââ¦vice Laundryâ visible on its side. Slides such as these went on and on. Lilly had everyone doubled up while Queenie clapped her hands. Young-Anna glared six-inch nails. Polly lit up and Big Beatty belched.

Judith leapt up. âThe last bus! Weâre going to miss the last bus!â Everyone screamed.

The women went berserk. They grabbed their bags hats and coats thanked Queenie for a lovely evening everybody kissed everyone and thanked Arthur for his wonderful slides and his most interesting lecture and they would come again in year or two when things had settled down. The girls streamed through the hall with Arthur picking his three-dimensional specs off noses as they passed. They barged through the entrance door and were out in the cold night. Taxi! They all screamed!

Arthur died a few years later.

Now I look back at that evening and I realize Arthur was the only one there who did not criticize. The rest of us found only fault where Arthur had in vain tried to please through his wonder at taking pictures. He needed no mind exercises no mantras and no daily reading of texts any obscure discussions no reminding him to radiate beams of Love he did not feel.

What he only saw was Essence so there was nothing to criticize.

DLP TVs - Not Your Mom's Projection Television

Everyone talks about plasma TVs and LCD TVs, but few talk about DLP TVs. These nifty high-def TVs are not the foggy, oddly-angled and difficult to view low-contrast sets of your childhood, but rather high-tech digitized versions of modern movie projectors. There are two types of DLP TV: the rear-projection set and a screenless projector usually referred to as a DLP front projector.

Because a DLP front projector is in essence a DLP rear projection set without the box, let's talk about that one first. These DLP TVs don't look at all like televisions; instead, they resemble digital slide projectors, squat little boxes that have a lens on the front. The television picture is digitally assembled inside the DLP unit and projected to wherever you want, usually a wall or a screen. The great advantage of this sort of DLP TV is that you have a picture scaled to whatever size you like. The disadvantage, of course, is the quality is limited not only by the DLP's specs but also by the quality of your projection surface.

Rear-projection DLP TVs take care of that problem, but at the cost of the great flexibility of the front-projection DLPs. These units look much more like the projection televisions of yesteryear, but with an enormously improved picture. While a DLP TV does not approach the contrast value of a plasma television, they are as good as most LCD TVs and are much tougher units.

A rear-projection DLP TV is surprisingly slender - not wall-mountable like a plasma or LCD model, but still only a few inches deep. Models that are wall-mountable or near it are starting to come on market right now, so you can expect that option in the near future. They are also significantly cheaper than plasma TVs, and in larger sizes are cheaper than comparable LCD TVs.

While the picture with a good rear-projection DLP TV is not quite up to the standards of a plasma, it is comparable with an LCD TV, and it has another major advantage: the backlight is replaceable. With an LCD TV, the light will dim over time, and repairing it is so expensive that it's cheaper to purchase a new television. A DLP TV light source will go out eventually, but the bulb is completely replaceable, in some models designed to be replaced by the purchaser, and much less expensive than a new set. If your television set is destined to get heavy use, a DLP TV is much more economical over time than a similar LCD TV. And a plasma TV? Forget about it! Once its light dims, it cannot be repaired and must be replaced.

The major manufacturers of DLP TV right now are Samsung, Toshiba, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, LG, and RCA. Most experts prefer Panasonics, but any DLP that uses mirror technology that comes from Texas Instruments is going to do well. The main thing to look for, besides picture quality, is a DLP TV that allows you to change the bulb yourself. Newer sets also use LED lighting instead of halogen lights. This is a distinct advantage for two reasons. First, LEDs last significantly longer than halogens (though halogens still have a long lifespan). Second, halogens generate a lot of heat, and the fan used to dissipate it in the set has a whining noise that irritates some viewers. LEDs emit very little heat and do not have the same problem.

I bought this about a year and a half ago and it's given me solid service.

I have it in my living room where I shine it on a 130" diagonal screen. I switch it between my laptop, DVD player, and Nintendo Wii and it projects all of them flawlessly. I don't even have to unplug it - it automatically looks for an incoming video signal and adjust itself accordingly. All I have to do is turn it on and pull down the screen. One of the easiest to use projectors I've experienced. The resolution (1024 x 800) is better than most projectors and the picture is bright and strong. A bit tough to see in daylight, though.

It has internal speakers that work adequately, but they're tinny and not very loud. I recommend getting a set of amplified speakers for an extra $100 or so.

The only complaint that some people may have is it's size. It's rather thick and bulky and not easily transportable, nor is it designed to be. But the extra size helps in cooling the bulb and makes it last longer.

It also comes with a remote control, which some may find handy but I've never used.

I originally purchased the Mitsubishi HC1500 DLP projector, but had some problems with it. Ordered this one from amazon and put them side by side. This isn't a review so much as a comparison between 3 Chip LCD and SINGLE CHIP DLP (which tend to be in the same price range). I actually liked the HC1500 a lot, but ended up keeping this SONY VLPAW10 for a number of reasons. It's not perfect, and in some areas underperforms the DLP. Here's the comparison.

Single chip DLP projectors create images by having a "chip" filled with thousands of tiny mirrors (1 per pixel on the screen) that can tilt up and down. When they tilt, they send light to the screen, when they don't tilt, the light stays in the projector. This ends up creating wonderfully bright and brilliant images. The only problem with this setup is that there's no color (just the white light is being directed) so the color needs to be introduced by spinning a color wheel in front of the chip. (in this case it's a 7 segment red-green-blue-white-red-green-blue wheel. The problem is that the colors are therefore being created via an optical illusion, which for some people creates a "rainbow" effect where they see color rainbows in the white areas of the image. It's very pronounced when there are credit rolls at the end of movies, or any other times there are high contrast black/white (or light/dark) areas. In a certain percentage of cases, the rainbow effect causes headaches and eyestrain It did so for me. (google "DLP rainbow effect" if you don't believe me. There are such things as 3 chip DLP projectors that don't need the color wheels and don't create this effect, but they aren't even close to being in the sub $[...] price range (they start at SEVERAL thousand dollars)

Three chip LCD screens actually have 3 panels (red green and blue) so they don't need the spinning color wheel, they just project the light through the panels, and the colors line up on the screen if calibrated properly. They are not as bright and brilliant as the DLP images because the light is going through the panels, and not being reflected by mirrors which create more direct light. The LCD projectors also need more space between the pixels than DLP, and this ends up giving you a more visible "screen door"effect where you can actually see the faint black lines of the pixel grid if you sit close enough to the screen (as if you were looking through a door or window with an insect screen on it, hence the term "screen door".

So that's the background, here are the results of my side by side tests (accompanied by the media manager for a major lecture hall at an Ivy League university) who is a specialist in these kinds of things (I myself teach video production, so have some expertise here as well).

The Mitsubishi HC-1500 (1 chip DLP)

Advantages

+ about half the physical size of the SONY.
+ Image is brighter
+ colors are more saturated
+ no need for air filter
+ less screen door effect

Disadvantages

- potential for rainbow effect
- noisy (the spinning wheel makes a high pitched whine which is louder and more annoying than the fan)
- If you have a small room, you may not be able to fill a large projector screen with an image because this projector cannot throw a large image from as short a distance as the sony

The SONY VLPAW-10 (3 chip LCD)

Advantages

+ no rainbow effect
+ quieter
+ can throw larger image from shorter distance

Disadvantages

- Much larger than the mitsubishi
- Bulb not as bright, need darker room
- colors are less saturated
- has an air filter than needs to be changed periodically
- more screen door effect
- HDMI input on the rear has a bezel around it that will make it impossible for some of the cables with thicker ends to fit in. I had to change cables to get this to work

CONCLUSION

I went with the SONY. It's not perfect, but for my needs it beats the Mitsubishi. I know there are a lot of die hard fans of the HC1500 and I'm sorry - but this is a fair assessment of my needs.

Some ways to mitigate the SONY's disadvantages:

Neither tv will perform great in a bright room, so both of these are really best suited for rooms where you can control the light.

In terms of the saturation, if you're watching DVD movies, then I think you'll prefer the LCD since it creates more natural colors. The DLP is better for watching HDTV shows where the colors really pop (like CSI Miami). I use it mostly to watch movies, so don't mind the less saturated and brilliant colors.

In terms of the "screen door" effect, I find this is minimized by defocusing the image just a hair. Yes the image is more soft, but this looks more like a projected image in a movie theater, and this is the effect I'm going for when watching movies on my projector, so it works great. It does not work as well to watch sports or news or other material that has lots of CG text up on the screen.

One last note, if you decide to buy it, the price of the sony does fluctuate on Amazon wildly ($[...] yesterday, $[...] today !!!). But I see it go up and down on an almost weekly basis. So time your purchase carefully!

The Introduction of Sound in Motion Pictures

In the mid-1920s, the film industry had met its new rival: the radio. Because of it, a lot of people stopped going to the movies and the movie industry was threatened. Amazingly however, scientists in the United States and abroad had simultaneously discovered a way to add sound to silent pictures. This discovery would save the film industry. The first sound pictures made were short films of concert performances. The movie produced sounds and music of the performers which thrilled the audience very much. The people started returning to the movies.

But it would not be until October of 1927 with a film called The Jazz Singer that the possibilities of sound were revealed. The Jazz Singer starred Al Jolson and had three song numbers and a few lines of spoken dialogue. Aside from these, it was a silent movie but the audiences were raving over it. The Jazz Singer was known as the movie that "talked" and was called a "talkie". The movie fascinated thousands and packed the theaters. The radio had met its match.

With the success of The Jazz Singer, the full transition from silent to all-talking movies would take over a year. The delay was due to many technical problems. The equipment had to be perfected and the sound projectors and soundtracks had to be standardized so that films can be shown in all theaters. Then, the theaters had to be installed with the sound projectors. Also, talking movies introduced a new set of problems concerning writing, directing and acting. The writers had to write dialogs and the actors had to learn how to say them. To solve this problem, stage playwrights and top-of-the-line dramatic authors were recruited to write the dialogue. Stage directors were also rushed in from New York to direct the actors who mostly did not know how to talk in their roles. It turned out that many romantic leading men had squeaky voices and their leading ladies did not have alluring voices. The rise of sound pictures became the end of a lot a silent screen stars. It also led to the fall of the great pantomime comics.

Sound pictures were made into musical comedies. The Coconut in 1929 introduced the four Marx Brothers. They brought a new kind of noisy farce. This brand of comedy depended much on the humor of the dialogue and the art of pantomime. These madcap comedians however eventually faded. A new kind of comedy was developed to fill the void left by the comedians. They introduced talking pictures known as sophisticated comedy which placed wise guys in unexpected situations. Memorable performers in these roles were Carole Lombard, Irene Dunne and William Powell.

Soon after the production of sound films came the gangster pictures. The earliest gangster films were inspired by prohibition racketeering. Movies like Little Caesar of 1930 and Public Enemy in 1931 had violent melodramas that introduced a harsh reality to the audience. These movies introduced a new batch of masculine stars with the likes of James Cagney, Edward Robinson, Spencer Tracy and Clark Gable.

After the gangster movies, films in different genres were made. With this began the Golden Age of Sound. Shown on the screens were fine dramas, comedies and action-adventure films. Also strong were the musicals with Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy operettas and the dancing team of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers as the favorites.

[I've been an Ed. Tech. for 37 years] Dang this Sharp XR-30X DLP projector I just bought! I got it for our elementary school's auditorium gatherings because our 3 other projectors are getting rather popular for classroom use lately. So I set it up with a couple of the others...and, well, now I'm gonna have to go buy MORE of 'em 'cause the Sharp makes the rest of our projectors look so OLD! And for $600! I now know why a projector's contrast ratio is a more prominent spec in website stores. It definitely makes the Sharp, uh, sharp! But its high contrast also does NOT affect(negatively), as so many other video projs do, its color range or intensity or the natural appearance of skin tones. And the remote is so complete there's even a menu for troubleshooting. How many other proj remotes offer that? I used it at a large(600) PTA gathering this past weekend, and during the next few days I had several teachers come up to me and ask where they could get one! Suffice it to say I am highly pleased with it!

The Stihl BG 85 leaf blower is one of Stihl's top of the line models. Some even consider it commercial grade - but all those homeowners with big yards, or lots of leaves to move, would have it no other way.

Here is a short summary of opinions given by lovers (owners) of this Stihl leaf blower.

Just about everyone comments and raves about its power. Unmatchable with any leaf blower anyone ever owned. It out powered Craftsmans, Ryobis, Toros and more. And, in one instance, although the statistics of Stihl's air movement or velocity are only slightly better than these other models, the leaf blowing was done in 20% of the time with less effort.

Owners liked the ability to not have to walk into the sticky branches or walk into their gardens to blow their leaves. It was quite powerful to do these things from a distance. Additionally, gutter extension attachments can be purchased so you don't have to go on the roof to clean your gutters. You can do it from the sidewalk.

Many comments were made about how ergonomically designed and balanced it was. Although it weighs less than 9 lbs, many thought this was quite acceptable - unless you have a super large yard to do. One fellow carried an Echo around the store for a while and then carried the Stihl around for comparison. He commented that he couldn't believe the difference between the two.

Others have noted the extra long tubes (and tips) that come with it. These were obviously well liked since they eliminate stooping when doing the work and the extra tips (with different shapes) provide for improved "impact blowing".

As far as noise level, it is a little higher than some others, but this comes with a catalytic converter to clean up emissions. Personally I don't know if this adds much noise to its use, but it is an excellent tradeoff to have a cleaner burning unit than a little extra noise.

Other features that were well liked were: the easy carburetor adjustment and easy start. Almost everyone commented about how it easy it starts after a few pulls. It also has a "cruise control" to control and lock in air flow and comes with small rubber feet to keep it from walking away if you set it down to do something.

Another very popular option (costs extra) is the vacuum attachment (and shredder blade). Owners were impressed with how easily the leaf blower converts into a highly effective vacuum/shredder which vacuums and shreds leaves, (wet and or dry) sticks, and nuts. A one bushel leaf attachment bag comes with it. Many were impressed with how well it handled the wet leaves - their other brands certainly couldn't do it.

All in all, this Stihl leaf blower is high quality, durable and meant to last years. While it is top of the line, and offers many wonderful features, the basics are the same across the entire line of leaf blowers. As with other things, you get what you pay for. You simply can't go wrong with a Stihl.

Building a Home Theater

The first step in building a good home theater is to get a job with a major producer of projection equipment to learn how to set up and maintain your home theater. Although this is what I did, of course it is not necessary to go to that extreme.

My training and experience with Barco Projection Systems, helped in setting up and obtaining the equipment needed for my home theater. I started with a dark basement room that was only about 9 by 20 feet. I had used it for many things over the years, from a play room for my daughter, to a workshop, a space ship, and now a home theater.

From work at Barco, where they were remodeling, I picked up some cloth-covered wall dividers they were throwing out and placed them along the sides of the theater too hide the cinder block walls and reduce the echo for sound improvement. I then paneled and painted the end wall a flat white for the screen. I use the entire wall for a screen with no border, that way the projected image becomes the border and it never looks like the movie is not filling the screen when watching a wide screen version.

It is good to know that all movies are shot on 4/3 ratio film. Wide screen versions just crop the top and bottom to make it look wide. I usually test a movie in both wide screen version and full screen to see where they are cutting the image. Sometimes after a movie had been edited to wide screen it is cut again on the sides to provide a full screen version. Kodak has produced such a high quality of movie film that it allowed the film makers to reduce the area of the raw film and still get an acceptable resolution. I enjoy both the wide screen and full screen versions. But is nice to fill out the entire wall with the picture.

For a projector, I kept my ears open for units being scrapped or sold cheep to employees. A few years after working for Barco they sold off some of the older demo equipment and I picked a Barco Graphic 400 projector. At the same time I bought a second broken projector for spare parts. Total cost was $150.00. Over the years with Barco I collected other used or broken equipment to add to my theater. The Video Enhancer VSE20 was a much needed accessory. Without line doubling the large image produces horizontal lines resulting from the resolution of the TV quality image from tapes and DVDs. The line doubling smooths out and fills in the missing information on the screen, resulting in HDTV quality from all TV and DVD input. No need to buy a HDTV.

With a good stock of extra parts for my old projector and a set of service manuals, I should be in good shape for many years to come. I have had to make a few repairs and adjustments over the years, but it has been worth it. The VS20 creates a lot of heat and after about two hours I would have to let it cool down, so I installed two quiet CPU fans on top of the chassis and solved the problem. When I started building the theater I picked up a display sound system from K-Mart for under a hundred dollars and the surround sound has been great. The projector is mounted overhead so it is not in the way and we have four nice rockers for viewing the movies.

For an added touch I installed rope light along the ceiling with a dimmer control. We occasionally watch TV in the theater but mostly save it for movies. We don't rent anymore, and try to pick out good DVDs to add to our collection. My favorite movie is Ground Hog Day, I never get tired of watching it and it is much better without the commercials.

You can still get good used projectors on E-Bay, try searching "BARCO" and look for projection equipment and video enhancers. The Small DLP technology projectors for under a thousand dollars make good home theaters also and video enhancing is not needed as you can only get the resolution that the projector is capable of. The digital processor in the projector acts as the video enchancer. The large image may not be as smooth as with a CRT projector and the lamp replacement costs are factors to consider when obtaining a large screen projector.

Media Training Tips: Maximising Your Media Moment

Media training is a 'must do' professional development program for any serious leader or manager.

Media interview training provides you with the skills to effectively deal with the media.

Media relations training, with a specific focus on media presentation training for television can be seriously nerve wracking for first timers.

Here's why you should consider doing a media training course and some essential tips from our media skill training courses.

If you go to the archives of any commercial television station and pull out footage from a news bulletin from the 1960s and view that footage with a stopwatch, you will find the average length of the quote (known as a sound bite or news grab) from the person being interviewed for the story is around 60 seconds.

If you watch commercial television tonight with your stopwatch at the ready, and measure each sound bite or news grab, the average length will be seven seconds.

This is why its being called McNuggett News! Its quick, slick, fast and tasty, but not very satisfying.

There are three reasons for this shortening of length.

1. Increased competition for our ever diminishing attention spans,

2. Increased choice, noise and clutter in our lives, and

3. The merging of information and entertainment dressed up as news.

So how do you get your message across about a complex, detailed issue through the media in seven seconds?

Well, you need to work out your key message and deliver it flawlessly as a media friendly quotable quote.

Remember, you have only one chance to get it right. The professional TV news crews I work with are constantly telling me about people who ring them after the interview and say "can you come back, I forgot to say this and that?"

Of course, the media are so time poor and deadline driven they never come back.

So you only have one opportunity to maximise your media moment.

How do you do this, especially for TV? Here are my Top 10 Tips:

1. Dress Well.

In the powerful visual medium of television you will be judged by your appearance. Clothing patterns and colours will contribute to the impact of your on camera interview. Avoid clothes with lots of designs or patterns. A dark jacket (blue, black, charcoal or navy) with a white shirt/blouse always looks good on camera. Take your cue from what TV newsreaders are wearing. Heed my mother's advice: "it is better to pay the extra and buy one really good suit than have many of inferior quality."

2. Warm Up Your Voice.

Tiger Woods wouldn't go and play a championship round of golf without warming up. You, as a professional communicator and official spokesperson should never engage with the media without warming up your voice.

3. Speak With Increased Energy.

Speak at a higher volume, range, tone and pitch than you would normally. Imagine having a conversation with someone and speaking at a slightly more animated level than you would normally.

4. Anchor Your Feet and Slow Deliberate Movements.

The more you move around the more your body language will distract from your message. Doing interviews standing, even radio interviews, will change your whole physiology and give your more energy and authority. Stand with your feet about shoulder width apart and firmly anchored to the ground. It is hard to sound credible standing on one foot.

At the book launch of Understanding Influence For Leaders At All Levels, I learnt from co-author Des Guilfoyle that slow, fluid and deliberate movements will give you more referent power, charisma and personal magnetism.

TIP: Watch your interviews with the sound off to get a better idea of what your body language is doing in the interview.

5. Keep Calm.

Assertive, aggressive, even angry reporters will fire off questions at you quickly, like bullets spitting from a machinegun. Their speech patterns will be intense and fast. Do not get drawn into mirroring and matching these patterns. In these situations, take a breath and speak more slowly than the interviewer.

6. Memorise Your Three Key Points.

You must be able to deliver these flawlessly without reading notes. Firstly, write them down. Writing things down helps fix them in the mind and seeing them written down also helps. Then compose a visual picture of the actual words. Visually place them in the top left part of your brain. When remembering these points, look to the top left hand part of the brain and they will come to you instantly like magic.

In technical terms, brain experts have shown the left-side of the prefrontal cortex (just behind the forehead) experiences increased blood flow as new information enters our episodic memory. In fact, the brain's thesaurus is dispersed in many separate parts of the left cerebral hemisphere (Source: The Odd Brain by Dr Stephen Juan, Harper Collins, 1998).

7. Never Say No Comment.

Journalists will believe 'where there is smoke there is fire'. Say no comment, but back this up with a valid reason.

8. Drink Plenty Of Water.

Keep hydrated and avoid caffeine and milk prior to an interview. Milk gums up your saliva glands leading to a dry mouth. This manifests itself in the common nervous habit of licking dry lips.

9. Get In The Moment.

Elite athletes talk about and practice getting in the zone to achieve peak performance. You need to do the same.

Try this: Relax, close your eyes and take three deep breaths, focussing on clearing your mind. Then visualise a moment in the past where you felt very motivated and very confident. Capture this moment in your mind and anchor those feelings. Place this mental picture inside your right hand and clench making a fist. Cover this fist with your left hand. Repeat this process until you can instantly put yourself into a state of peak performance.

10. Review, Evaluate and Improve.

After each media interview always review:

What worked well?

What could be improved?

What will I work on for next time?

Death by PowerPoint!

The most critical job of a manager, when you boil it all down, is communication. To be successful, a manager has to be effective in communicating one-on-one, in writing and in groups. While weakness in any of these three disciplines will compromise the ability to lead, the weakness most often seen in managers is in group communication. And it's the most conspicuous.

Group communication can be one of a manager's most powerful assets. When presenting to a group, he or she has its full attention â" at least at the start. The trick is to keep it.

Rather than dreading or being reticent about it, managers should seek out opportunities to present to anyone in the company. The best way to develop any skill is through repetition. This particular skill also helps to increase personal and professional exposure.

Unfortunately, corporate presentations and sales presentations are usually either:

1. Mildly competent, or

2. Career killers

The advent of new media and technology that facilitate communication and improve our ability to convey our ideas also can have the opposite effect. If a manager has a propensity to dig a hole for him or herself in a presentation, PowerPoint can be an earthmover on steroids that will bury the presenter totally.

On the other hand, managers who are adept at presenting and public speaking can communicate even more effectively and convincingly with these tools.

A Near Death by PowerPoint Experience:

Weâve all endured them â¦ PowerPoint presentations that drone on forever. I call this âDeath by PowerPointâ.

One of my near-death by PowerPoint experiences occurred in the northwest corner of Newfoundland, Canada. A company that I used to work for had a small factory there. I had flown there with the company president, a few fellow officers and Bill Drellow, the freelance writer who I tapped to edit my most recent book, âThe Lost Art of General Managementâ.

After touring the plant with the staff and making the general niceties with the production folks, we settled in the conference room for the homestretch â¦ the PowerPoint presentation.

The projector warmed up, the presenter clicked on his computer, and I saw something that almost killed me on the spot â" the little box in the lower left corner of the frame that read, âSlide 1 of 101â. Thatâs right, 101 slides!

I didnât have the heart to pull the plug on their presentation and ask them to get to the point in 20 slides or less. The team had worked very hard to improve that factory, and they deserved the chance to relate the pride of their accomplishments on their own terms. So there I sat, contemplating forms of suicide (remember Airplane, the Movie?) to end the pain of nonstop listening.

The moral of this story is that all we walked away from this presentation with was the impression that they worked hard and that they presented 101 slides! Beyond that, I couldnât have recalled three things they had tried to communicate to us 15 minutes later.

The Ten Elements of a Great Presentation
1. Before you do anything else, identify a maximum of three key points you want the audience to remember.

2. Determine why your audience should remember these points, so you can communicate that, too.

3. Open your presentation with the âwhyâ in such a way that it takes no more than one minute to explain. If you canât explain to the audience why your presentation is important to them within one minute, you've lost them.

4. Never forget that the audience cares less about what you have to say than you do.

5. Remember what you learned in fourth grade: Speak at an appropriate rate. Not too slow or too fast. And project your voice.

6. Communicate broadly through body language as well as spoken language.

7. Donât use the podium unless you're stuck reading a speech and it's the only source of light. It's easy to create the impression you're holding on to it for dear life. Speakers who walk around a podium instead of rigidly standing behind it show more confidence, differentiate themselves from other presenters, and are more interesting to watch. Walking, talking and gesturing at the same time also is a great way to hide the yips because all the adrenaline doesn't go to the throat.

8. Be so well-rehearsed that it doesnât sound rehearsed. There's no substitute for preparation.

9. Review your presentation with a trusted colleague or two to ensure it says what you think it says and is easily understood.

10. When using slides -

Â§ Organize your presentation so the titles of the slides alone tell the story. Any other text should simply support the title.

Â§ Donât overuse distracting gimmicks like animation.

Â§ Never read the slides word for word. Their only purpose is to reinforce what the audience is learning.

Â§ Never spend more than two minutes on a slide.

Â§ Finally, and most importantly, prepare your presentation so that you don't actually need any slides. If you can be effective without slides, you're a great presenter. If you can do that, you can use slides to enhance your presentation, rather than leaning on them like a crutch.

The Three Types of Presentations
There are three basic types of internal presentations that managers should be adept at delivering. There are numerous hybrids, but the three basic internal presentations are:

1. The Vision, Mission, Goal Presentation

2. The Results Presentation

3. The Change-Initiative Presentation

The general theme that can always be used and tailored to suit any of these types of presentations follows this pattern: âWho we are, where we are going and how we are going to get there.â

There also are three general types of external presentations:

1. Customer Presentations

2. Supplier Presentations

3. Investor/Banker Presentations

The purpose of external presentations usually is to influence the outcome of a negotiation. Thematic elements include âWhatâs in it for youâ and âHow we can do this together.â

Again, presentations should always start with âWhy this is important to you (the audience)â.

I canât emphasize enough that if you want to succeed as a leader, you must master the art of group presentation. If you just arenât comfortable with it, there is only one way to cure your discomfortâ¦ do as many presentations as possible! Comfort and an air of controlled self-confidence will only come from experience. The more you avoid developing your presentation skills, the heavier this anchor will become on your career.

Take a course, join Toastmasters, or buy a video/CD on the subject. Start with easy small group presentations and continue to work your way up until you are comfortable regardless of how many people are in the room.

I have made it a requirement that each of my direct reports take a course in public speaking. The ones who jumped to the task without delay have shown amazing progressâ¦ not just in their speaking skills, but in their leadership. Why? Because the skills I have outlined become part of their general way of thinking, talking one-on-one and writing. Soon, they all become significantly stronger communicators who incorporate âwhy this is important to youâ into their communications.

I've owned my projector since September 2004 and haven't experienced any problems with it yet. I have about 2200 hours logged on the bulb so far and the brightness hasn't gone down from what I can tell. It projects well onto a white wall, but I wanted a more movie-like experience so I built a 90 inch screen to project it onto. Like one of the other reviewers, when I go to turn off the projector it sometimes acts like I hit the button twice, but since I'm trying to turn it off anyways I don't care. Never had the problem of accidentally turning it off before. The remote is quite thin so it is hard to hit the buttons to accidentally turn it off. Overall I am quite happy with it. I have taken it around to my friend's houses for the superbowl and other events since my place is too small for a large gathering and it's a quick setup. The picture quality is still quite good in normal lighting so I don't have to close the blinds every time I want to watch TV. I'd recommend this projector to anyone on a budget. For the price it can't be beat.

My specific requirement was a projector that could provide a DVI input from my laptop docking station which has both a DVI-D digital only signal output and a VGA port. My primary monitor is a 20" flat panel screen and my secondary monitor is a 17" flat panel the first connected via DVI and the second connected via a standard VGA port and cable.

I did not want to have to remove my computer from the docking station or change the display setup to set the primary monitor as the VGA display just to use the projector. So to avoid this I needed a DVI-I or DVI-D connection on the projector. That by virtue of the DVI interface also provides a better picture as the signal no longer needs to be converted between digital and analog VGA output. When not docked I use a standard VGA port and cable as the laptop itself does not provide DVI output.

This projector is the best I could find at the price that provides DVI-I input, is lightweight, has remote with laser, supports all the resolutions and other features I might need.

I have learned more than I ever should need to know about DVI connectors, cables and supported signals. There are DVI-A (analog only), DVI-D (digital only), DVI-I (digital & analog) connectors and cables with two types of digital signals being supported. There are both single and dual types with dual providing greater resolution capability. what is supported depends upon the type of connector or cable used and the support provided by the device. This can easily get confusing with some five or more, different connectors and pin-outs.

I like this unit, it provides a clean clear crisp picture at 220 Lumens. It is lightweight just over 4lbs. It has keystone correction, full remote with laser and supports a wide range of resolutions with support for a variety of video input connections including regular VGA as well as digital with DVI-I support. I really like the soft flexible rubber lense cap and the compact carrying cable with space for all the cables you may need to have with you when on the road.

I had previously tried a 3M MPRO110 PICO projector which was not really usable even for my meager needs and then a fabulous TOSHIBA TDP-SP1U DLP Mobile Projector but it lacked the digital input support I needed. Despite that the warranty on the Optoma EP721 Projector is only one year compared to the Toshiba, it delivers all the features and functionality I need in a portable unit. Truly outstanding and a quality unit for the money.

I bought this projector because I need to show videos to large groups of people. I have it hooked up to a dvd player via the S-Video cable, and the picture is sharp. If you plan to watch videos with this projector, it will work nicely. It has 800x600 resolution, and as of right now, DVDs and standard TV are only 720x480 (so the resolution is more than enough). If you want to display HDTV, this projector can process a 720p signal, but it will downconvert it to fit its 800x600 native resolution.

It is not the brightest projector (the 1800 lumens is more like 1600), but it is more than adequate in a partially-lit room, even when on "economy mode." In addition, when in economy mode, it is nearly silent. Because it is a DLP projector, you do see the occasional "rainbow effect" (basically brief flashes of rainbow colors when darting your eyes back and forth across the screen).

Previous to this purchase, I used a much more expensive projector, but because I use it for showing standard-resoltion DVD videos (i.e., not HDTV), this one works just as well. The bulb is between 250-300 depending on where you find it.
